#SOLIDARSOCIAL

How did #SolidarSocial get started?

The #Solidar Social program was initiated in 2020 in response to the emergency generated by the COVID-19 pandemic and continued in 2022 during the refugee crisis in Ukraine. In both cases, the program operated on the basis of volunteerism and donations in products and food from individual donors, companies but also international humanitarian organizations.

"I started #SolidarSocial in one breath, I didn't have to think about it, it was a spur of the moment decision, together with my wife. I really thought that many of my friends and co-workers would support me, that there would be companies in the industry who would donate leftover food and employees in the industry who would want to volunteer. But I never imagined for a second that this campaign would be this big. Both acquaintances and people I had never interacted with joined the project on a daily basis, and our cooking and delivery capacity was constantly growing. It was the kind of experience that somehow changes your world view, gives you the belief that even in the darkest scenario, there is that famous light that we are all waiting for."

#SolidarSocial in the COVID-19 pandemic

Humanitarian program #SolidarSocial was initiated out of necessity in April 2020, during the state of emergency generated by the COVID-19 pandemic. There was a great need for social solidarity in those days when we all felt put to the test. We chose then to react, not to sit on the sidelines and try to help through what we do best: to feed people. It started as a pandemic crisis solution, quickly taking off and involving dozens of people in just a few days. SolidarSocial was initiated in collaboration with the General Directorate of Social Assistance and Child Protection Sector 6 and the hot meals reached the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Prof. Dr. Matei Bals, Colentina Clinical Hospital, Fundeni Clinical Institute and vulnerable people under the care of DGASPC Sector 6. Almost 100 volunteers and 17 cooks and over 30 drivers supported the program.

#SolidarSocial in the refugee crisis in Ukraine

In February 2022, the Solidar Social team of volunteers and chef Hădean reached the borders of northern Romania, where tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees are traveling. In the few months that this campaign to help Ukrainian refugees has been active, donations have been donated over 100,000 meals in Bucharest, Constanța, Iași, Sighetu Marmației and Botoșani. The programme was also supported by the international organizations World Central Kitchen and Cuisine sans Frontieres, which together donated €400,000 for the preparation and distribution of hot meals.

"I came with my colleagues, volunteering with World Central Kitchen, Chef Jose Andreas' organization. It's a pretty big organization that serves hot food to people in conflict zones. We already have two years of experience in our Solidar Social program, because since the beginning of the pandemic we've been doing this for two years; and we joined forces with World Central Kitchen, to help the refugees coming from Ukraine, to help them feel good for at least a minute, eating a hot soup or stew before they go on their way." - Chef Hădean
